Sydney Sucks: Why I hate Sydney
2 Sep 12: Comments are closed. Please make your way to the I Hate Sydney forums instead.
Sydney is a festering hellhole of a place to live. With a statement like that, this article was always going to be subjective, but I've listed a few good things underneath. My advice: come see the place, but be careful about staying!
Things I Hate
- Housing. Prices in Sydney are some of the highest in the world. Not only because of the location but because population growth is outpacing development, thanks to our incompetent state government. Realistically, only two-income households (average) can consider buying a house within an hour of the CBD.
- Renting. Because of that scarcity, rents are ludicrous while rental vacancies are below 1% in some areas. You'll be competing against 20 - 50 people to rent that crumbling hovel of an apartment. Landlords here are diabolical: they'll dodge repairs while raising rents at the drop of a hat.
- Traffic congestion, retarded motorists, abominable roads and limited parking - a whole 'nother article.
- Appalling public transport. There are vast swathes of the metro area that are not adequately covered, thanks to our incompetent state government, so you'll have to drive. If you're lucky, you can rub up against sweaty commuters in your 10-year old train that's running late. (RailCorp is some kind of hybrid business orchestrated by our greedy state government and has been the subject of an ICAC corruption enquiry).
- Antisocial people. Nobody in Sydney wants to make your acquaintance. Sydneysiders are incompassionate, rude and snobby. They walk briskly while listening to their iPod and averting eye contact. Sydney motorists will overtake you while you're sliding down the road after falling off your bike (true story).
- The crowds: people everywhere, on the streets, on the platform, in traffic. It's a bloody ant colony.
- Obsession with wealth and glamour. On the streets, BMW X5s, Porsche Cayennes and Hummers. Versace suits, designer sunglasses and pointy shoes. In the clubs, tiny dresses and 6-inch heels. Go to the Races at Randwick and see what I mean. Nary a skerrick of substance.
- It's bloody expensive! Rents are ridiculous. It costs $15 just to get on the train out of the airport, or $15 to park for an hour. Local beers at city establishments will cost $5, spirits upwards of $10 and cocktails $20. Meter parking varies anywhere from $2.20 to $6.60 per hour, and you'll need it. Using taxis more than occasionally will bankrupt you.
- Everyone seems to be highly strung. Stressed about their exams, their work, their mortgage... who knows?! Some might like life "fast-paced", but I think life's not meant to be that way. Happy heart attack!
- There is very little intrinsic culture to Sydney, even more so than Australia in general. I have fond memories of Old Sydney Town, but it closed down in 2003. Culture seems to revolve around drinking, working and holidays? Oh yes and sport. Australia is a young country after all.
- Migrants. Sydney is a major entry point for migrants into Australia, and though I have nothing against migration per se (I am one), volumes of ill-mannered migrants inhabit the city. These are people who refuse to integrate and move only amongst their own insular groups. In some places, the typical bystander won't speak English! Conversing loudly in foreign tongues in public is not appealing.
- Urban sprawl. On average, it takes more than an hour in traffic to drive out of city, if that matters to you. Unless you pay coastal rents, you'll also spend time in the car getting to the beach.
Mitigating Factors
- The geography of the harbour, the beaches, the bridges, it's all very beautiful.
- The weather is relatively mild for a temperate locale, with warm, sunny summers.
- The handful of tourist traps: the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, Bondi beach, Manly beach and ferry, Taronga Zoo, The Blue Mountains (getting B-grade now...)
- The city is quite multicultural, so you can dine at many foreign eateries and partake in culturally diverse activites such as salsa.
- Jobs are plentiful and pay better than other areas, but you'll need it!
Edit 3 Feb 12: I just want to make a few points clear:
1) Sydney does not equal Australia. Australia is the best country in the world and there's nowhere I'd rather live.
2) I am Australian, no less than any other. I don't feel racism or xenophobia are a big problem in Sydney, but
3) I've left in all but the most abusive comments, I think they speak for themselves.
I'd never had any problem meeting new people and making friends in my life before moving to Sydney and most describe me as a charismatic person. Yet I've been in Sydney since March/April 2009 and I've made few friends outside of work and have struggled to get a social life. People here just aren't open to outsiders and it's hard to meet people I have anything in common with.
And no it's not typical of the rest of Australia. Even in the central coast you find the true ockers who can be overbearingly friendly.
I'm seriously contemplating a move to Melbourne.
KEEP AUSTRALIA, AUSTRALIAN!
BRITS **** OFF BACK TO BRITAIN
**** OFF UK PEOPLE GO BACK TO YOUR UK AND DRINK UP AND GET BAD TEETH LIKE YOU ALREADY DO AND **** YOUR WHORE WOMEN
XX LILA FROM BONDI
The English MADE Australia. I sit here in the UK and contrary to what you think, Australia is known as a racist, backward colony of criminals. Unfortunately this is the truth and your ancestors were actually criminals! This is a fact :D
Whats worse, is that they were the stupid criminals, the onces who were so dumb they got caught so your ancestors were not only criminals but dumb clueless criminals.
The attitudes in Australians today about anti English, anti world, smack of nothing but an inferiority complex.
English should always have a right to come and visit. This is a fact set in stone.
And to answer why English people stay, its only because of the climate. Don't kid yourself, if not for the climate of Australia, believe me 99.9% of the immigrants would not be there.
People, let me promise you, based on the COUNTLESS people I have asked, is that most people do not even factor Sydney (or Australia) as part of the world. I have been here 5 years and no one in the developed world, USA, UK, America or Europe actually even mentions the word 'Sydney' when it comes to global matters or even what is considered a world City.
Finally the truth is simply that there is a massive inferiority complex in the syke of Australia. It's a shame, because the country is a backward hole and you guys are being ripped off on everything. Internet, utilities, rent, mortgage, prices, EVERYTHING - you are being overcharged, paying SO much more for SO much below what even some developing countries now have.
So get off your high horses.
I think I've finally had it and I'll be looking to move elsewhere before this town kills me.
If you do the right thing and get a good job you can't even afford a decent house! Even then anything below an hour each way to work is a luxury like a Rolls Royce or something.
The people are scum and everybody that I've genuinely liked and respected over the last few years have either been from another country or somewhere else in Australia.
Had lived in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth and still rank Sydney way below.
The most annoying part though is the people itself, not friendly in any way except when money is involved.
Its very sad to watch my home deteriorate in this way. The infrastructure is crumbling because the government has not planned for the massive influx of people. The population has doubled in my lifetime.
As for the multiculturalism... i cant stand it. The entire south east of sydney is a dump, dirty and grubby.
Give me back Cairns and its heat humidity and cyclones any day. At least the air is fresh.
As far as British are concerned, they are more than welcome in this o****ry. After all, we basically are british. Im ashamed to have read anti- brit comments on this thread. As you know, they are from sydney themselves and hence re-enforce the reasons why Sydney is a hole.
write your" loving sydney" on other page then
People pay 300% more than what their real estate is worth. Infrastructure is appalling. Full of rude, self centred, shallow, conceited, back stabbing , money hungry idiots that think that paying 800K for a run down piece of shit unit in the Eastern Suburbs is okay??!!
The property boom there is over. The days of idiots making money off idiots is over. Now many of them are struggling because they were delusional that real estate doubles every 7 to 10 years in value. It truly shows it's a city full of clueless idiots with a half wit sheep mentality.
I live on the Great Barrier Reef, in God's country.
Life is not about real estate, fancy cars and mega debt. All that proves is that you are an imbecile. Life is about being happy. Sydney will never give you that.
Stay clear of the soul sucker and you'll find that Australia has so many beautiful places to live. Open your mind and realise that you're living in a shit hole.
"sydney city is what you make it"
''all i can say "
if its too expensive then steal.
if migrants are getting on your nerves hit them in the head with a longneck .
is you thinks its too over crowded then go on a shooting spree.
if you think its go no culture then build a shrine.
if rent is too high then sleep in hyde park.
if parking it to expensive then sell you car.
if you think transports bad then get a bike.
if people are hi strung then offer them a valium.
@Jimmy - you're leaving for America. Lucky!
Sydney siders will complain about almost everything just don't point out how much of a shit hole sydney is
when they move to other cities they **** the city they live in by driving the way they do in sydney the people and the city are totally ****ed the best thin that could happen to this place is be wiped off the earth by a natural disaster!!!!
new slogan for sydney to attract tourists should read as such
SYDNEY come get bashed we love bashing our guests
getting shot sure we'll shoot you
our public transport is so technilogically advanced we just leave you on the side of the road SYDNEY the place to go if you have no tolerence for anything or anyone and you think your the be all and end all of everything
Stupid people, doing stupid shit, in Shitsville.
I had to find short-notice child care recently. I hear you laughing now. You don't get ****ing anything on short notice in this city. Tried all the day care centres on the entire Northern Beaches. Not one could fit me in. Fine. Hit Gumtree looking for a nanny. Two problems: 1) Nobody had availability until the following week. As if that ****ing helps me NOW. 2) They all want $25+/hr. Now, I don't begrudge anyone earning a living BUT how does a 19 year-old uni student feel ****ing entitled to a $52,000 annual salary? How about $12/hr?
So what did I do? Took two days off work. On the bright side, I got to spend time with my boy which is ****ing shit loads better than banging away at my dead-end job. I also didn't have to endure Shitybus for two days. On the downside, I'm broke.
But...I'm leaving soon. I bought my last Travel10 this week. I nearly came on myself with glee. **** you Sydney.
Cos the government sold it all to foreign investors.
@Electro. I think you're right about Sydney being a den of thieves. Sometimes I feel as though if I were to collapse on the street, I'd probably get robbed.
The biggest problem with Sydney is the soul destroying task of finding a decent place to live within 10km of the city at an affordable price and finding a job if you are a graduate (thats also a suprisingly major problem in Perth too).
http://smh.domain.com.au/real-estate-news/3m-burwood-sale-puts-spark-into-top-end-20120708-21phb.html
$3 million in Burwood? Um...Burwood?? I mean...****ING BURWOOD??? The place is a God-awful turd sticking out of the poo-chute known as Parramatta Road. Jesus ****ing Herbert Christ Almighty. Good luck with that you poor dumb ****ers.
That's all I have to say about that.
Congratulations on getting out. You are a example/role model for the rest of us.
My biggest bugbear, touched by lots of people already, is the seeming lack of general friendliness. Maybe I have to go a bit more out there myself. But Talk to someone in your gym and you get reported; smile at someone in the street and they think you're a freak. And yes, all my friends are all about: what property should I buy, what's the lowest mortgage, that sort of thing, no real culture, no real humanity.
And dare I even talk about the infrastructure.
http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/big-sydney-bid-to-boost-number-of-migrants-20120320-1vi1r.html
Liberal, Labor and The Greens and big business are hell bent on turning all of Australia's cities into shit holes with ridiculous amounts of immigration.
You all need to vote for the Stable Population Party next election.

Eat my shitty ass Sydney.
I dont think Sydney has nay more racism that any other place. Yes most people are unfriendly but I dont think racist is the word for it.
I do think that if you come to a new country then you shoudl speak thier language and not expect them (us) to speak yours. If I went to Europe to live I would expect to speak the language of the country I was going to.
Firstly why are you commenting on this page? I live in affluent suburb in the east, a well paid career so money is no issue. I tried going shopping today but the fashion or what's on offer is embarrassing, cheap and ugly I wonder what you wear and where you shop you I'm sure you look like a boring Sydney typical person BORING try New York or Europe darling
As for fashion - people in Argentina dress way better and look more relaxed than your typical Sydney sider.
@Marko - dude, I know what you mean. I let people in when they indicate. But I've seen what many others do and it's disgusting.
stunning, the outdoor lifestyle is amazing if your into etc, ill always remember sydney as one of my favorite places,
I don't live in Sydney, not for three years. I do not care anymore. If you want to whinge, go to ihatesydney.net.
